My diners' club sale had released some of my funds, but that was not enough. I could have used my savings, but after the jones & laughlin disaster I had decided never again to risk more money than I could afford to lose without ruining myself. Consequently I have never again added to my market funds from my show-business income. The only possible thing to do was to take a close look at my old friend lorillard. Was it still behaving well? It was not.

To bring out the peculiarities of a mortgage, let us consider some alternatives. Suppose a man about to buy a house owns some common stock. Should he sell that stock in order to reduce the amount he borrows on a mortgage? If he concentrates all or most of his capital in the house, he loses the protection of diversification, whose advantage is explained in a later chapter. Also, how will the rate of return the borrower will receive on common stock, including both dividends and growth in value, compare with the rate of interest he will pay on a mortgage? In some of the older, broadly diversified common-stock mutual funds, the long-term average annual rate of return has been between 9 and 16 per cent, depending on which period of years is considered.

For Pro Secrets and Strategies on all Aspects of Best Option Trading, visit

But if it does, he will sell you 30 shares at your specified price of 104. In the same circumstances, a limit order to sell American Tobacco at 104 would be executed at the round-lot price of 104¼. What happens when a stock rises or falls more than the …› or ¼ -point the dealer is entitled to? National Cash Register is at 67½, and you wish to buy at 66. The dealer will meet your order when the round-lot price hits 65¾. The stock backs down to 65, goes to 66½, 66V4, and then in a thin market it plummets to 64½.

A wholly owned subsidiary, Tri-Continental Financial Corporation, with assets of 4 to 5 per cent of the total assets of the parent corporation, functions to invest in special situations. While portfolio turnover is relatively low, changes in policy and in market fluctuations have resulted in some interesting variations in the ten largest holdings of common stocks as listed on the next page.Seven stocks in the first ten in 1956 are not included in the tabulation of values at the end of 1960. Tri-Continental has been more successful than some other investment companies in building up investment income per share over the years, aided by the excellent dividend record of public utility companies, in which its holdings have been large. The broad diversification policy and good dividend record probably account for the fact that the common stock has continued to be among the first ten stocks used by investors in the Monthly Investment Plan (MIP) of member firms of the New York Stock Exchange. Tri-Continental follows a different dividend policy than most other investment companies.

How much is an inventory worth? In an inflationary period such as this one, when costs and prices are spiraling upward steadily, this is a tricky question to answer. California Stand-ard, as you can see, carries its crude-oil-and-products inventory at cost, on a "last-in, first-out" basis. To understand what the LIFO method of accounting means, visualize one of those large, aluminum-colored storage tanks into which, over a period of six months, California Standard has been pouring oil from the refinery, and from which it has been drawing oil, a barrel at a time, to sell to this customer or that. The $2.5 billion California Standard corporation would be appalled to hear that it does business this way, but our crude example will illustrate a subtle point.

8 per cent. For the 1948 buyer, it is over 14 per cent. It is easy to show how rich we all would be if all the opportunities presented us had been recognized and seized. But, as must be said every so often, the market also goes down. People who bought near the top in 1957 or 1959 may not have such happy tales to tell in the years ahead.

0 billion in 1951 and $3.4 billion in 1960. Pension funds and investment company purchases have shown by far the most rapid increase, more particularly in recent years. Life insurance companies have been adding to their holdings at the rate of only about $100 million annually, and have been in no hurry to reach legal maximums. Investment in equities by fire, marine, and casualty companies has been at the rate of about $200 million annually. Savings banks are adding to their stock portfolios at about the same rate as life insurance companies, a somewhat unexpected situation.
